WORTH 10U 2ND IN REEBOK INVITATIONAL
blank
Nikki Bagwell, Caralisa Connell, and Lindsey Halliburton each tossed a complete game no hitter as Worth Extreme Heat (10U) rolled through the Reebok Invitational at the Sports Zone in Indianapolis last weekend. The young squad dropped a 1-0 decision in the Championship to finish 2nd to the Indiana Shockwave who won the NSA World Championship in 2001 and placed 5th last summer.

In pool play, Bagwell fired an impressive 15 strikeout no hitter against the Evansville Cobras, and came one batter short of a perfect game. A bobbled grounder was responsible for the only Cobra runner in the 3-0 win. Worth broke the game open with a 3 run 5th inning rally when Carly Birdsell walked, stole second and scored on a Brittany Elmore single to center. Halliburton walked and stole second, and Sarah Beth Roberts doubled both runners home.

In the second game, Connell no hit the Indianapolis Diamond Chix and drove in 3 runs in the 4-1 victory. Worth put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the 1st when Connell drove home Halliburton and Roberts. The Diamond Chix answered with their only run in the bottom half of the inning on 2 uncharacteristic Worth Extreme Heat errors. In the 3rd, Worth padded their lead when Kendall Hooper scored on an Ashley Hammer RBI, and Halliburton scored again on another Connell RBI.

On Sunday, Halliburton struck out nine while recording Worth's 3rd consecutive no hitter against quality competition. Hooper broke the scoreless tie in the 3rd with a triple that scored Birdsell and went home on an errant throw to 3rd. In the 4th, Worth bats again came alive as Bagwell scored on Lauren Allen's single. Birdsell reached on a fielding error and stole second. Both runners scored on an Elmore ground out chopper to the right side. Hooper singled, stole, and scored on another chopper to the right side, this time by Halliburton, to make the score 6-0. Halliburton then struck out the side to end the game.

In Championship Game on Sunday, Worth faced off against a strong Indiana Shockwave squad in what turned out to be a classic pitching duel between a pair of flame throwers. Kaitlyn Flak of the Shockwave and Worth's Bagwell each allowed only one hit. Worth was able to get runners to 3rd twice but failed to get a bunt down to score the run. The Shockwaves picked up their only run after a base on balls and a stolen base on a controversial call. With the runner breaking for 3rd on the pitch Brooke Jordan laid down a nice sacrifice bunt for the second out of the inning, but a brief hesitation on the play allowed the runner to continue toward home and beat the throw by a hair for what proved to be the winning run and the championship.
