|Worth Extreme Heat 11U and Worth Delta Force both walked away with hardware this weekend after impressive runs through the twelve team USSSA April Fools Challenge 12U World Qualifier. Extreme Heat knocked off the Collierville Lady Dragons twice on Sunday night to win the Championship while Delta Force battled their way to a 3rd place finish. Nikki Bagwell earned the Best Defensive Player award, and Kendall Hooper was named the Tournament MVP.
Both Worth teams won their respective pools and earned top seeds on Saturday morning. Extreme Heat erupted offensively in 10-0 and 9-1 wins over the Thunderbolts and Tennessee Slammers. Delta Force knocked off the Mt. Juliet Diamonds 5-4 and pounded the Hendersonville Heat 11-0.
Delta Force opened elimination round play with a solid 2-1 win over the Xtreme Chaos to advance for a show down with Collierville. In spite of being the recipient of a horrible call that erased a run and squelched a rally, Delta Force stayed focused and held a 1-1 tie into the final inning. The Lady Dragons managed to get the winning run across the plate with two outs on a passed ball for a 2-1 win. Delta Force would then drop to the loser's bracket for what would end up being rematches from earlier games. The first against the Diamonds was a replay of Saturday's pool game. Delta Force hit the ball hard early and played outstanding defense to hold the lead and eliminate the Diamonds, setting up another rematch against the Xtreme Chaos. With bats booming, Delta Force put on an offensive show in the opening innings, and put 10 runs on the board quickly in another impressive win that advanced them to the semi-finals.
Extreme Heat was making their own run through the brackets. A solid defensive effort secured a 2-0 win over the Clarksville Heat, and they followed that with a 10-2 win over the Crusaders in a Saturday night game that didn't finish until after midnight to advance to the winner's bracket finals. On Sunday, Extreme Heat dropped their first game of the tournament in a 1-0 loss to Collierville.
Unfortunately, the loss set up an Extreme Heat vs. Delta Force contest that would send one team home. Delta Force, playing their 4th game in five hours, simply ran out of gas and came up short in a 5-3 game. Exhausted and dirty following a tremendous showing throughout the tournament, Worth Deta Force took home the 3rd place honors with a 5-2 record on the weekend.
In the championship game, Extreme Heat lit up the Lady Dragons for four runs in the top of the first and added runs in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th innings to extend the lead to 8-1. Collierville rallied in the last inning, but it wouldn't be enough as Worth held on for an 8-4 win to force a second game. In yet another late night game, Extreme Heat broke a 2-2 tie in the last inning with a pair of doubles by Sarah Beth Roberts and Ashley Hammer and held the Lady Dragons scoreless in the bottom half of the frame for a 3-2 win and the championship title.
Delta Force returns to action next weekend in Cookeville at the Clash for Cash, while Extreme Heat travels to Clarksville to compete in the Diamond Duel. Congratuations to both Worth teams on their outstanding performances in Bethesda this weekend.
