| Bowling Green, Ky. — After picking up a win over Oklahoma in his first career start, Western Kentucky University freshman right-hander Matt Ridings was honored on Tuesday as the first Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week of the 2007 season.
Ridings, a native of Nashville, Tenn., and graduate of Battle Ground Academy and member of the Brentwood Bulldogs, blanked the Sooners over five-plus innings to pick up the win in WKU’s 11-5 victory on Sunday. He scattered five hits over those five innings, striking out two and walking just one.
Ridings is the first Hilltopper hurler to earn Pitcher-of-the-Week honors since Matt Wilhite late in the 2003 season. He is also the first WKU freshman to win the award since Josh Novotney in 1996.
The Hilltoppers (2-1) will play 13 of their next 14 games at Nick Denes Field, beginning this weekend with a three-game series against Miami (Ohio).
